Privacy
Most privacy statements are long because they have a lot to hide. This one is short because this site collects little, and nothing at all until you say so. Here is the whole picture.
What we collect
Browsing, searching and filtering needs no account, no login and no newsletter. There is no tracking pixel from an advertising network anywhere on this site. Listing pages keep a simple, anonymous view/click count on their own, described below; beyond that, the only other thing we would like to measure is how many people read which pages, and for that we ask first: until you press Accept in the bar at the bottom, no third-party analytics script is loaded and no analytics cookie is set.
The one exception is listing a property yourself, which needs a free account made with just an email address, confirmed by a link we send you. If you do, we also store what you submit: the listing details (description, price, photos, how to reach you) and your email address. We use this to review the submission before anything is published, and for no other purpose. You can ask to have your account and any submissions deleted at any time through the contact form.
A second exception is the contact form. If you use it, your name, email address and message are sent to our mailbox so we can reply. They are not stored on this site and they are not passed to anyone else. If you would rather we forget the conversation afterwards, say so and we will delete it.
The search and the filters run entirely in your own browser. Your choices end up in the address bar so you can share or bookmark them, and that is where they stay. Nothing is sent to us.
Anonymous counts, across the site
Every page keeps a simple, anonymous count of how many times it was viewed; listing pages also note whether you followed a link through to the provider’s own site. This runs regardless of the choice below, because it sets no cookie, stores no IP address, and cannot identify you: only a random code sits in your browser’s local storage, purely so the same visit is not counted twice. Nobody outside this site can read it, and it is never combined with anything else. It tells us how many people find this site useful, and which listings and providers are worth showing more of, nothing more.
Visitor statistics, only if you allow them
If you accept, this site loads Google Tag Manager, which in turn starts Google Analytics 4. We use it to see how many visitors there are, which pages they read, and roughly where they come from. We do not use it to build advertising profiles and we do not sell anything to anyone. The measurement itself runs at Google, so the data passes through Google as well, under their terms.
Google Analytics 4 does not store IP addresses. Yours is used for a moment to work out roughly where you are, no closer than the city, and is then discarded: it is never written to disk and never appears in a report. That is not a setting we switched on, it is how the product works, and there is no switch to change it. The measurement data itself is kept for 14 months, after which Google deletes it.
If you refuse, none of that happens. Your browser never contacts Google, no cookie is set, and any analytics cookies from an earlier visit are deleted. The site works exactly the same, and you are not asked again unless what we measure changes.
These are the cookies that appear once you accept, all of them from Google:
- _ga and _ga_YZCTQWEGH5 tell one browser apart from another and keep the pages of a single visit together.
- _gid does the same for a single day.
- _gat_UA-212225860-1 limits how often measurements are sent. It comes from an older Google Analytics tag that is still in our tag container.
You can change your mind at any time, in both directions, at the bottom of this page. Withdrawing also clears the cookies above.
What our host sees
The site runs on Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare handles the request your browser makes and can log technical details such as your IP address, in order to serve the page and to protect the site against abuse. We do not use that for analytics and we do not build profiles from it.
Third parties that see your IP address
Every page pulls in some things from other servers. Whenever your browser fetches something from another domain, that domain sees your IP address. There is no way around that short of not loading the content at all, so instead we list them:
- Google (googletagmanager.com, google-analytics.com) for the visitor statistics, and only once you have accepted them. Refuse or ignore the question, and your browser never contacts either.
- CARTO and OpenStreetMap for the map tiles, on pages that show a map.
- Wikimedia Commons for some photos in the travel guides.
- The providers themselves. Listing photos are loaded straight from the provider’s own server rather than copied onto ours, so the provider sees that a photo was requested. Right now that is 13 domains: assets.guesty.com, b3099682.smushcdn.com, beachhousebonaire.com, bonaireoceanfrontvillas.com, files.caagsoftware.com, harbourtownbonaire.com, l.icdbcdn.com, media.vrbo.com, qvillas.com, rentalsbonaire.com, sunbeltbonaire.com, sunrentalsbonaire.com, therealestateguybonaire.com.
Apart from the visitor statistics, which only run if you allow them, none of these are advertising trackers and none of them are there to follow you. They are there because the page needs a map tile or a photo. The typefaces and the provider logos are served from this site itself, so nothing leaves your browser for those.
Links to other sites
Every listing links through to the provider. Some of those links earn us a commission, which is explained on how we source listings. Once you follow a link you are on their site, under their privacy policy, not ours.
The data on this site is about properties, not people
What we collect from providers is information about rental properties: type, size, price, neighbourhood, photos. Where the source data happens to contain the name or direct email address of an individual employee, we do not publish it. It is not shown on any page and it is not in the structured data.
Questions, corrections and removal
Use the contact form. That applies whether you want to know what we hold, want something corrected, or are a provider who would rather not be listed at all. We keep our email address off the page because anything published in plain sight is harvested and spammed within days, which helps nobody.
